Queuing Theory and Problems

Dr. Madhusudhana Rao Cuddapah

When ever the capacity of service facility is insufficient to serve all the approaching customers at a time, a waiting line of customers is formed which is called a "QUEUE". The phenomenon of formation of a queue is quite interesting and grabbed the attention of several researchers to study the queuing parameters in order to minimize the number of waiting customers and their valuable time. In any country, if you observe, the population who are waiting in one queue or the other, all the time spent by them waiting to get the service is unproductive and it badly effects the country’s productivity. In order to overcome this, we must be in a position to understand what is a queue? How it is formed? What should be the optimal service level which is affordable by the business (system) so that the total cost (i.e., the waiting time cost of the customers and the cost of operating the service facility) is minimum.
